Who we are?
Owner, cook, baker and chief bottlewasher.
I established The Cake House originally in 2014 after a career in local government and looking for a change (or do they call it a midlife crisis lol) motivated by my love for making wedding cakes and into a joint venture alongside the vintage styled tearoom.
After a few years and after many wedding cakes the shop seemed to go through a natural growth for more food and so a new journey started. This journey was aided by my transition to veganism in 2017 and the shops transition to caffé No 3 was born.
We have grown our vegan menu over the last year and we continue to evolve in look and menu and by the end of 2019 we will have taken meat totally off the menu. We have built up a loyal customer base and fine-tuned our product offering due to demand to be mostly vegan and vegetarian. We also offer many Gluten Free products.
We offer a range of milk alternatives not just for vegans, transitioning vegans but individuals with dairy intolerance’s. Please ask a member of staff if you are trying milk alternatives for the first time and we can try a help you find the alternative for you.
The caffé looks very different these days and is a far cry from the white and pink vintage tearoom that once looked over the Cenotaph in Spennymoor.
Thank you to all our customers old and new that continue to support our independent and locally owned business. Also, for giving me the support to align my business with my ethical choices.
For that I sincerely Thank You
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
As a business who does use takeaway packaging we endeavour to reduce our environmental footprint as much as possible by using compostable disposables; apply the 3 R’s as much as possible.
Steps do we take to reduce waste.
All disposables are compostable/biodegradable and all our paper, card and plastics are all also recycled.
We use containers and reusable covers to keep food in; to reduce our use of clingfilm.
We reuse jars where possible. You may notice some when little ones are having a cold drink. We also stopped using disposable plastic straws in the spring of 2018 opting for paper and bamboo straws.
Our coffee and veg/salad scraps go to a local business to be composted.
We do not purchase plastic water bottles, tap water and ice is available and glass water bottles are available.
Carbonated drinks are either served from a glass bottle or a can.
We are always happy to hear any ideas you might have on how we could improve, so if you have a great idea that we can practically implement then we’d love to hear from you.
Why we chose Kimbo
After testing out several coffees in the lead up to opening; we chose Kimbo Extra Crem for its wonderful espresso; for its sweet and bold depth of flavour with its aptly named extra crem top. A fantastic base for all our coffee drinks.
No wonder Jamie Oliver chose Kimbo Coffee brand in 2015 for all his Jamie’s Italian outlets across the UK. (We had it first though) lol
Kimbo started out in Naples as Caffé Kimbo where a small roasting plant was set up for the sale of roasted coffee to coffee bars and coffee shops. Since 1994 Caffé Kimbo has held second place on the Italian retail market for packaged coffee and today is present in over 40 countries across the world.
Kimbo Coffee visits the plantations in the growing countries regular to purchase the highest quality coffee bean varieties and refines them according to the Neapolitan tradition. Caffe Kimbo is one of the largest roasting houses in Italy. A large variety of blends offers the entire range of Southern Italian coffee creativity. The passion for coffee roasting began with the Rubino family half a century ago. In Italy, this espresso is a classic for more than 50 years. In the shadow of Vesuvius, the Rubino family has passed on their experience and passion for roasting the traditional Neapolitan espresso from generation to generation. Innovative ideas and the excellent quality have pushed Kimbo coffee into the 2nd place in the Italian market.
